Tips: Variable frequency drive noise and vibration problems and solutions
When using VFD for speed adjusting, it will produce noise and vibration. This is because the VFD output waveform contains high harmonic wave. With the change of the operating frequency, the fundamental component and the harmonic component all change in a large range, which is likely to resonate with the inherent mechanical vibration of the motor, and the resonance is the source of noise and vibration.

  1. When the low harmonic wave components in the output resonate with the inherent mechanical frequency of the rotor, the noise will increases. When the high harmonic wave components in the output are resonated with the iron core, machine enclosure and bearing bracket at the vicinity of the respective natural frequencies, the noise will increases.
The noise generated by the drive motor, especially the harsh noise, is related to the switching frequency of the PWM control, especially in the low frequency region. To solve this problem, usually connect AC reactor on the VFD output side. If there is electromagnetic torque margin, u/f can be set lower to reduce noise.
  2. When the VFD is in operation, the magnetic field caused by the higher harmonic wave in the output waveform generates electromagnetic driving force for many mechanical parts. When the driving force frequency is close or overlap with inherent frequency of these mechanical components, will resonate. The main effect on the vibration is the lower harmonic wave component, which has a greater impact in the PAM mode and square wave PWM mode. But when using SPWM mode, the low harmonic wave component is low, and the impact is also lower.
The method of reducing or eliminating the vibration is to connect the AC reactor to the output side of the VFD to absorb the high harmonic current component. If still using PAM mode or square wave PWM mode VFD, switch to SPWM mode VFD to reduce pulsating torque, weaken or eliminate vibration, and to prevent the mechanical part damage due to vibration.
